A sample where households "or individuals" are contacted at random with known (i.e. pre-determined) probability from a publicly available list. Under pure random conditions, all prababilities will be equal, with each address standing an equal chance of being contacted. Alternatively, disproportionate sampling techniques may be used to vary prababilities within specified segments of the population. This is most commonly practised in the selection of regional samples. For example, if sizeable representative samples are required for two regions with very different populations, the probability of selection will most likely be set higher for the region with lower population.
